OUR WAYS OF WORKING

There is a specific skill set required for online qual…

We have moderated over 100 sessions online in the last 2 years. We have developed the skill set and are fully appreciative of the challenges and benefits of the methodology

Skills needed

A moderator in a physical focus group can use presence to gain rapport.

Online, the questioning needs to be softer to begin with, reassuring, there is an absolute need to be democratic and create no hierarchy whatsoever. By this we mean it should be collaborative in approach, questions should include more closed ended and factual answers and not continuously laddering. Why? Because it gives the respondent a sense of value, that they have contributed positively and are being listened to – this then helps them open to what could be an otherwise artificial interface.

Listening is obviously important to any qualitative sessions but for online it is magnified by several factors. We have all had that online meeting where conversation is stilted, people over talk one another. The moderator skill here is not to interrupt, be sure of sentence and point completion and move from there.

Principally it is like an everyday conversation, and that’s where ‘qualisations’ was born - listening, collaborating and creating great insights.

Collaboration & Creation

Collaboration and cultural awareness are critical. For the co-ordinating team, this is always vital. With online there is a need to observe, make notes but also have follow up meetings with the moderator. In the same way you would grab a conversation with the moderator in between and after groups, online needs this interface.

As such, these meetings are scheduled
1) Before to get context, 2) Between groups to understand nuance and hidden meanings of responses, 3) Debrief in order to get a nuanced and granular interpretation and not just the explicit.
These steps become even more vital online.
